Therapeutic yoga is very different from what most people think of when they hear yoga. This is not restorative yoga, yin yoga, or flow yoga. This is about listening to your body and trusting its innate wisdom.

Five-Day UnChallenge: Moving Beyond Effort

Therapeutic Yoga

Day 1: The Three Pillars of Therapeutic Yoga Practice

Today, we will move slowly, quietly, and deeply in our first practice together. The sequence focuses on the three pillars of relaxation, stability, and range of motion. I’ll guide you through several poses so that you can be fully absorbed in what you feel as you move.

Props Needed:

  • Two Blankets

  • Mat

  • Belt or Scarf

Day 2: Dropping Into Your Body

Day 2: Dropping Into Your Body

The focus of today's practice is feeling and experiencing your body. Many of us have lost touch with our body's inner wisdom because there are lots of messages telling us how we should feel and what we should experience.

To help us tune into our body's wisdom, we'll notice the reside of each pose and how it affects our minds, bodies, and breath. We will also pay attention to these sensations in our bodies with our minds.

Props Needed:

  • Two Blankets

  • Folding Chair

  • Mat

  • Belt or Scarf

Day 3: Core Resilience

Although our bodies are not symmetrical, we can imagine our core as the midline of the body. It gives us stability and strength while also allowing us to adapt and become more resilient.

Our core plays a key role in any balance pose that we practice. Today we will play with standing balances with your eyes open and then with your eyes closed. This experimenting allows you to feel into the muscles and stability of your core.

We will also work to strengthen and stretch these central muscles with mindfulness and awareness of breath.

Props Needed:

  • Two Blankets

Day 3: Core Resilience
Day 4: Getting Unstuck

Day 4: Getting Unstuck

All bodies are put together differently. Some of us can touch our toes, while others’ anatomy does not allow this movement.

Today we are looking at our range of motion and how much our bodies can move. This is an individual experience where we will assess what is going on in our own bodies. What parts of us are stuck? What movements do we tend to avoid?

Props Needed:

  • Two Blankets

  • Mat

Day 5: Integration of Your Body: Moving Beyond Effort

In today’s world, many of us have lost our ability to trust our natural inner intelligence and the wisdom of our bodies. It’s much easier to listen to external voices and opinions, but those may not ring true for the person you are.

In our practice, we will cultivate a curious and open mind. Once we understand where we are in this moment, we can go from there and begin to incorporate more variety into our practice.
